About this lesson

Our research shows that students lack an understanding of British responses to the Holocaust. This lesson encourages students to construct an understanding on the historical record.

Introduction

This lesson responds to the myths and misconceptions students hold concerning British responses to the Holocaust, highlighted in the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education student survey (2016).

It aims to encourage students to construct an understanding of British responses based on the historical record, using primary source documents from archives such as the Wiener Library, the National Archives, Mass Observation and the Churchill Archives. These are used to support students in developing a differentiated understanding of what British responses there were, when they developed, how they changed an interacted with one another, and what, if anything, they meant and mean today.
