Application Notes
As the module is fully-funded for practicing teachers in England, competition for places means we are often unable to accept all applicants: to ensure you are able to make as strong a case as possible, it may be worth considering the following criteria before completing the application form;
- Preference will be given to teachers either currently teaching about the Holocaust, or due to teach it soon, in state schools in England.
- Teachers in private schools, teachers in other countries, and teachers that have had experience of teaching about the Holocaust that is not recent (especially if it is more than 3 years since you taught it) are very welcome to apply, but just be aware that funded places give first preference to current state-school teachers in England.
- Educators from institutions such as galleries or museums that are engaged in some form of Holocaust education are also welcome to apply. In the supporting statement at the end of the application it would help if you outline how this course may help develop you professionally in the work you do with young people in your specific context.
- Current levels of engagement with our Centre also help us to determine acceptance onto the course. In the section on the application form outlining current CPD you have engaged with, the more you can show , the stronger your application will be.
The application lists a number of courses we run, some in-person and some self-guided. The list is not exhaustive – there may be other events advertised on our website you can attend, or asynchronous activities such as listening to some of our podcasts that you can mention in the ‘Other’ category.
Note that we only take into account engagement you have already completed at time of application, rather than things you are aspiring to do in the future. Also be aware that CPD you have completed through other organisations can help support your application, but for this course we prioritise engagement with our own Centre. For more information about our CPD provisions please visit our website.
- ITE and ECT teachers are warmly welcome to apply. Evidence of enthusiasm, commitment and a capacity to work independently and with others and develop professionally on this course are more important considerations than length of service and levels of experience.
- At the end of the application form you are invited to provide a supporting statement for your application. To ensure you provide as strong a statement as possible, please try to mention:
:: Your motivation to applying for this course, in particular how you hope this course may help develop you professionally. What impact do you hope it will have?
:: You might mention the impact that attending any of our CPD events has already had on your teaching of the Holocaust.
:: Any extra experiences in the field of Holocaust education not already mentioned that you have engaged with.
:: Whilst the course is asynchronous, you will still need to commit to reading academic writing and posting and responding to ideas in an online community every week, as well as completing an assessed academic piece of writing towards the end of the course. An indication of your commitment and ability to organise your time to do this will also help your application.
Educational Background
- In this section you will need to demonstrate that you meet UCL’s criteria for study at post-graduate level. This includes a good undergraduate degree and fluency in English.

Work Experience
- In this section please describe your teaching experience of the Holocaust to-date. To qualify for this module you need to demonstrate some experience of teaching the Holocaust in an English secondary school. As part of the funding for the module we are required to ensure that what you learn will have an impact in the classroom, so we are also interested to know more about under what circumstances you will be teaching about the Holocaust in school(s) in the future and any relevant career plans you may have
