English Martyrs is a Catholic 11-18 mixed comprehensive school in Leicester. We were one on the first schools to pilot the Beacon School programme .
We have a large number of the staff who have completed the Centre’s CPD programme, including the head teacher. The lead teacher has also completed the MA module ‘The Holocaust in the Curriculum’ with the IOE. The lead teacher and the head teacher both took part in the first joint trip to Washington and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum which began the pilot scheme for the Beacon Schools in 2012.
We teach Holocaust education throughout the school to various age groups and through various subjects in a whole-school approach to Holocaust education, in particular in History, English, R.E., Citizenship and Pyschology – although this is expanding into other subjects.
We were the first school in the country to pilot and trial the ‘Pursuit of Justice’ teaching materials focusing on the case and trial of John Demjanjuk, the alleged Nazi war criminal. We are keen to pilot and trial other such work in conjunction with the IOE.
Last year we led CPD days for Leicester schools in conjunction with the Centre to deliver the programme to our partner schools as well as other schools in the city.
