CTC Kingshurst Academy has been involved in promoting awareness of the Holocaust through a range of different programmes and initiatives.
CTC History teacher, Tamsin Curtis is passionate to help us play our role as a Beacon School. So far, this has included leading visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau, developing the teaching of the Holocaust within the history curriculum and the planning and delivering a curriculum day on genocide awareness. As part of this, year 10 students learned about genocide and its impact and what we can do to help prevent it. Students also worked with the art department to create a memorial to the Holocaust which is displayed at the entrance to the school.
Through our work with the Centre for Holocaust Education we aim to further develop the history curriculum to give our students a richer understanding of pre-war Jewish life and the impact that the Holocaust had on this. We also would like to encourage and develop a more cross-curricular approach to Holocaust studies and ensure that this is an issue staff outside of the History department feel comfortable discussing with students. We also hope to increase the curiosity of our students in this area and for them to become more involved within their community and to consider how their role in society can prevent such atrocities from occurring.
