In July the Centre launched its Quality Mark Programme. This programme has been conceived to recognise commitment towards ongoing quality provision for, and innovation in, teaching and learning about the Holocaust within Beacon Schools (since the project’s inception in 2012).

The quality mark enables us to champion best practice and continue the Centre’s and schools’ developmental partnerships beyond the Beacon School programme year.

The programme began with a one day, pre-arranged visit to The Bishop Challoner Catholic Federation of Schools in Tower Hamlets.

In Bishop Challoner we recognised a ‘true Beacon School’. The report that followed the visit reflects our pride in engaging ‘…with reflective and inspirational teachers, determined to always improve their practice and so supportive a leadership team, with a clear mission and sense of the wider and valuable contribution Holocaust education can make to their students school experience’.

The Centre is delighted to award re-designated Beacon School status to The Bishop Challoner School and congratulate Ms Carrier, Mr Soar, Ms Easmon-Johnson, the wider staff and student body for embracing this programme, giving it the status, time and support necessary to ensure the impressive impact to date. A feature on the Bishop Challoner Quality Mark visit, a copy of the full report and details of the process will follow shortly.

We look forward to our other Beacon Schools taking up this exciting quality mark opportunity to recognise such excellent work in the future. Contact Nicola Wetherall, Schools Network Co-ordinator for details of the process at n.wetherall@ucl.ac.uk.
