My talk will address questions such as

  • Why was Terezin ghetto established in the first place and how come it was established there? Was it a ghetto, a camp or actually both? What were the essential differences between Terezin and other ghettos?
  • Who was deported there? What kind of life developed in Terezin? What were the relations between the different groups in the ghetto? Why did many children lived separately from their parents? How come there was so much art and cultural life in Terezin?
  • Why does it have an image of being “not such a bad place”? How come there was a propaganda movie shot there? What happened eventually to the Jews in Terezin?

Grant Rogers – Informal Learning Manager at the Imperial War Museum and Visiting Lecturer at the National Gallery

Grant

I will be discussing some of the art from the Terezin Ghetto but I will also want to talk about Holocaust Art in general and how, what, why we have collected it in the Imperial War Museum. I will focus on a few paintings from the National Gallery collection as well. The principle artist from the IWM collection I would like to focus on is Roman Halter. As a survivor his work is well represented in the IWMs collection.

I would like to explore how educators can use paintings from our national collections to assist their classroom practice.

Programme:
• 16:30 – Registration, Food & Wine Reception
• 17:00 – Lecture and Q&A
• 19:00 – Event concludes
