‘The Transformation of education begins with teachers’ – Ruth-Anne Lenga, Programme Director.

‘One of the most invigorating things about being a teacher is being able to transform lives. Teachers, in their professional capacity, have that inimitable opportunity to draw out the very best in human beings during their most formative years. Teachers can build young people’s self-belief, their appreciation of the value and fragility of life, the importance of compassion, and equip them with powerful knowledge that will help them to make sense of, and take on, the world. Teachers can transform the experience students have at school and help them see what is possible despite the challenges they may face.

It all begins with the teacher.

That is why UCL Centre for Holocaust Education champions teachers and is why we invest our expertise in developing teachers’ abilities, confidence, and creativity to do their remarkable job at an advanced level. We are fortunate to work with outstanding teachers from a diverse range of schools and Multi Academy Trusts, across the country.

On this, World Teacher Day, I would like to pay tribute to the commitment of our Beacon School teachers who are attending our programme during this, our 10th anniversary year. We also wish to commend our alumni of Beacon School teachers and Quality Mark teachers for the well-conceived, thoroughly researched learning experiences they provide for their students, following attendance at the programme and our CPD courses.

We so look forward to meeting the 2022 cohort, in person, later this month at our residential London weekend. They are beginning a journey with us to transform education and build a legacy of quality Holocaust teaching and learning within their school community.’
