How can the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education support you?

For the newly or recently qualified ECT, those teachers who are going to be teaching about the Holocaust for the first time in the coming year they are a range of ways you can be supported by the Centre and your own mentors within school as part of your induction. Whether the curriculum demands you deliver a full scheme of work/learning on the topic, perhaps in History or RE, use a related case study in Social Science, explore a Holocaust inspired text, poem or play in English, MFL or Drama, or in a pastoral/tutor capacity to support whole school marking of Holocaust Memorial Day and so on, the prospect for ECTs can be daunting. We know from our teacher research that 83% of teachers who teach about the Holocaust regard themselves as ‘self-taught’ with 77.5% stating they would welcome high quality CPD to help with this challenging subject. Identify this need in your discussion.

The Centre offers a range of FREE specialist and research online CPD opportunities; these Holocaust teaching and learning professional development can be accessed in range of ways (and would benefit from Appraisal support or acknowledgement)

  1. Our new Core CPD modular offer, ‘What was the Holocaust, how do I teach it and why does it matter’. These are a series of ‘live’ online sessions that will flexibly support subject knowledge, confidence, pedagogy and practice and colleagues can sign up now;
  2. We have a range of ACPD ‘live’ online bookable FREE workshop sessions;
  3. We have a number of self-guided, online CPD courses that can be accessed and explored anytime, anywhere.  The ‘6 things your students should know about the Holocaust’ and ‘Authentic encounters…’ courses would best support ECT.

It is worth the appraisee doing some research in advance of the appraisal. Find one or more of the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education courses via our website and go to your appraisal prepared; state the personal development/T&L case for support; these are, in the COVID-19 context all available remotely – so you wont need to travel, secure cover etc, but even without the need for permission to attend the CPD it is worth your interest and engagement in this specialist training being acknowledged and flagged up in your mentoring, support or appraisal processes.
