Holocaust, genocide and crimes against humanity. Suggestions for classroom teachers.
Many teachers and students wish to relate teaching and learning about the Holocaust to understanding more about other mass atrocities, genocides and crimes against humanity. However, to date, little conceptual thinking has been done about how to do this appropriately and effectively in the classroom.
Paul Salmons, of the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, chaired an international group of experts who explored these issues and developed suggestions, advice and information for classroom teachers.
This group has been working under the auspices of the intergovernmental International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education, Remembrance and Research, consisting of 27 member states. The papers of Salmons’ committee were accepted by the plenary of member states and are now available for you to read.
