We are deeply saddened to hear the news of Sir Ben Helfgott’s death, aged 93.  Holocaust survivor and British Olympian, Sir Ben was a remarkable man.  His contribution to Holocaust education and commemoration in the UK and beyond was profound.  He was a great friend to the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education.  He supported our establishment in 2008 and remained a steadfast and active adviser.  We were delighted when, in 2012, the university awarded Sir Ben a richly deserved honorary doctorate for his outstanding service to Holocaust education.

An inspirational man, warm and friendly he was committed to changing the world for the better.   His loss will be immense, and all of us at UCL offer our deep condolences to the Helfgott family and those who knew and loved him.
