We are thrilled that Dr Nicola Wetherall has been awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours 2017.

Dr Wetherall is a key member of the Centre for Holocaust Education and also works part-time at the Royal Wootton Bassett Academy (RWBA) in Wiltshire. Her MBE recognises her services to Holocaust Education, Genocide Prevention and Human Rights Education.

Having taught for 10 years in state secondary schools, Dr Wetherall has established a unique whole-school, holistic programme of Holocaust, Genocide and Human Rights Education (HGP) at the RWBA. The programme combines Dr Wetherall’s academic background with classroom practice and has garnered national and international recognition. Students are given the opportunity to engage with survivors and respected experts in the field of Holocaust Studies and genocide prevention.

Dr Wetherall transformed Royal Wootton Bassett Academy into a leading school in the field of Holocaust and Genocide Studies.
As a result of her work and the support of its remarkable head teacher George Croxford, the school has become globally recognised for its vision, teaching innovation and culture of student empowerment. The school now has support from leading human rights campaigners across the world. In particular Nicola was able to develop a close friendship between the school community and the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Elie Wiesel who died earlier this year.

Professor Stuart Foster, Executive Director, UCL Centre for Holocaust Education, said:

“Receiving an MBE in this year’s New Year Honours List is a worthy acknowledgement of Dr Nicola Wetherall’s passionate and zealous commitment to meaningful Holocaust, genocide and human rights education.

“Nic divides her time between teaching at Royal Wootton Basset Academy and working for the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education. She is a remarkable and dedicated educator and we are so proud to have her as a close colleague at UCL. Her vast experience, knowledge, compassion and energy combine to ensure our research-informed programmes are grounded in the realities of the classroom and directly address the needs of young people.

“We are privileged that Nic is part of our team and absolutely thrilled that her inspirational work has been recognised in this prestigious award.”

The New Year Honours list recognises over 120 people for their contribution to education, children’s services and equality and diversity.
