On 11th May 2014 the IOE’s Centre for Holocaust Education and the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) Committee on the genocide of the Roma,  will  welcome teachers  and educators to join with international experts in understanding  this often neglected Nazi genocide.

2nd August 2014 will mark the 70th anniversary of the closing of the ‘gypsy camp’ in Auschwitz-Birkenau and the murder of the remaining 2879 Roma and Sinti, mostly women and children who were imprisoned there.

The conference will include:

  • Keynotes will be given by Dr Slawomir Kapraski, Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academic of Sciences, Warsaw and Mirjam-Angela Karoly, OSCE’s Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODHIR).
  • Workshops led by colleagues from across Europe who will share teaching and learning materials suitable for classroom use.
  • An expert round table discussion focusing on the historical past and the contemporary situation of the Roma.
